Paul Waring shot a bogey-free 7-under 63 to lead the Texas Children’s Houston Open by one shot over Gary Woodland after the first round. Waring, who earned his PGA TOUR card through the DP World Tour, has battled a shoulder injury that sidelined him for five months but produced a tidy round, including a key par save after a tee shot into the water. Woodland, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, continues his comeback after brain surgery in 2023 and recently opening up about his PTSD, and shot 64 with late birdies. Sam Burns, Michael Brennan and Tom Hoge are two shots back on 65. Brooks Koepka struggled with three double bogeys in a mid-round collapse and shot 75, putting his cut in danger, while players are also chasing a final chance to qualify for the Masters.
