Richard Sterne is a winner again on the DP World Tour after capturing the Soudal Open 2026 in Belgium — his first title since 2013.
The decisive moment came at the 17th hole at Rinkven International Golf Club where the 44-year-old produced one of the best shots of his career. From 276 yards, his approach finished just feet from the hole for eagle — coming incredibly close to an albatross.
“It was one of the best shots I’ve ever hit,” Sterne said afterward.
The victory carried extra emotion given the South African’s long injury battle. Over recent years, Sterne has undergone multiple wrist surgeries, hip surgery and even a spinal disc replacement — setbacks that nearly ended his career.
“It’s been a very tough few years. There were times I didn’t think I’d get back here,” Sterne admitted.
One of his biggest motivations was allowing his children to finally see him win again.
“My oldest son is nearly 13 now. That’s about how long it’s been since my last win, so this means a lot.”
Fellow South African Zander Lombard had led most of Sunday before a costly double bogey at the 14th dropped him back, eventually finishing two shots behind Sterne.
